Every Great Movement Begins with One Voice

The story of the Grassroot People and Gender Development Center (GRADE) did not begin in an office or boardroom. It began with a quiet young girl who struggled to speak.

Growing up, our founder, Vivian Ifeoma, was naturally shy. Outside her home, she rarely spoke. In school, she often knew the answers to questions but lacked the confidence to raise her hand. Her report cards consistently described her as “very quiet in class,” and people would sometimes ask her mother if she was deaf because she hardly spoke.

Everything began to change during her secondary school years when she participated in HIV/AIDS prevention education. Watching facilitators confidently educate young people about health, self-protection, and making informed choices opened her eyes to the transformative power of knowledge. For the first time, she realized that education could save lives and empower people to shape their own futures.

A few years later, during her National Youth Service Corps (NYSC), she was selected for a UNICEF Life Skills training. That experience became a turning point. It equipped her with confidence, communication skills, and leadership abilities that helped her overcome years of self-doubt. More importantly, it helped her discover something she never knew she had—her voice.

Soon after, Vivian was selected as a World Pulse Voices of Our Future Correspondent (Nigeria, 2010), where she joined a global network of women using storytelling to advocate for gender equality and social justice. During the six-month mentorship programme, her mentor encouraged her through affirmations and believed in her dream of starting a community-based organization dedicated to empowering women and girls. That encouragement became the foundation of a vision that would later become GRADE.

As Vivian found her own voice, she began to see herself in many of the girls around her. She realized that countless girls and women remained silent—not because they had nothing to say, but because fear, discrimination, violence, harmful social norms, and limited opportunities had convinced them that their voices did not matter.

She made a decision that would shape her life’s work:

If she could help one girl find her voice, that girl could change her own life. If she could help communities find their collective voice, they could change society.

That vision led to the establishment of the Grassroot People and Gender Development Center (GRADE) in 2010, with formal registration following in 2014. Since then, GRADE has grown into a trusted community-based organization working to advance gender equality, protect children, strengthen safeguarding systems, promote women’s leadership, improve community health, support healthy ageing, and build resilient communities across Nigeria.

Over the years, GRADE has worked alongside women, girls, children, schools, community leaders, government institutions, civil society organizations, and development partners to create safe spaces where people are equipped with knowledge, leadership skills, confidence, and opportunities to thrive.

From Girls Corner and Ladies Corner to child protection programmes, climate action initiatives, community health campaigns, and economic empowerment projects, every GRADE programme is built on one simple belief:

People become agents of change when they are empowered to believe in themselves, speak up for their rights, and lead solutions within their own communities.

Today, GRADE continues to amplify the voices of those who are too often unheard, working towards a future where every woman, every girl, every child, and every vulnerable person can live with dignity, equality, and opportunity.
