Project Summary

With support from ActionAid Nigeria under the Women’s Voices and Leadership Nigeria Project Strategic Opportunity Fund, Grassroot People and Gender Development Center organized a Capacity Building Workshop on Road Safety Laws, Offences, and Fines for 20 female public transport drivers in Lagos State on the 17th of August, 2023.

The workshop was designed to strengthen the knowledge and capacity of female commercial drivers, particularly keke riders, on road safety regulations, responsible driving practices, and compliance with traffic laws. The training also aimed to promote safer roads, reduce traffic violations, and support women’s inclusion and professionalism within the transport sector.

Our Intervention

  • Organized a one-day capacity-building workshop for 20 female public transport drivers.
  • Facilitated training sessions on road safety laws, traffic offences, and penalties.
  • Engaged key road safety agencies including Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) and Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) to provide expert guidance and practical education.
  • Sensitized participants on responsible driving behaviour, safety precautions, and legal compliance.
  • Promoted women’s empowerment and inclusion within the transportation sector.

Impact

  • Improved the knowledge of 20 female keke drivers on road safety regulations and traffic management practices.
  • Increased awareness on traffic offences, penalties, and the importance of compliance with road safety laws.
  • Enhanced participants’ confidence and professionalism as female public transport operators.
  • Strengthened collaboration between women drivers and road safety agencies in Lagos State.
